Since its approval in 2020, the project has raised massive funding, estimated at nearly $2 billion. Fifteen stations, $1.3 billion investment to complete the project, this Kano-Maradi line initiated by former Nigerian President Buhari himself from these northern regions of the country is funded and built by a Chinese operator Complete commissioning is scheduled for 2026.

284 kilometers long, this steel ribbon crosses plains, villages and border posts, redrawing the map of regional trade It is designed according to international standards, with a normal track of 1435 mm suitable for mixed passenger and freight transport Its operating speed, estimated at 150 km/h, promises unprecedented fluidity for the flow of essential goods from cereals to manufactured products.

In a context where Niger, an overcrowded country, remains dependent on road transport, the Kano-Maradi line presents itself as a concrete response to traffic congestion and continued increase in logistical costs. Connecting Maradi to the Nigerian railway network, which itself is connected to major ports in the Gulf of Guinea, this corridor becomes a bridge to the ocean for a country so far without direct access

If the project responds to major logistical challenges, it also draws its strength from the prestigious history of the cities it connects. Kano, founded over a thousand years ago, is a metropolis with a glorious past.

On the other side of the border, Maradi is nicknamed Niger's "economic capital" This fertile city is renowned for its agricultural produce, including maize, sorghum, peanuts and pepper, which supply much of the country and fuel trade with neighboring Nigeria Maradi has always played a pivotal role for growers, farmers and traders who find Kano as their preferred outlet.

At regional level, the Kano-Maradi line is part of a broader vision: to connect the heart of the Sahel with Atlantic ports through a modern, competitive and sustainable rail network. It thus contributes to strengthening the competitiveness of Sahelian economies, while realising the ambitions of the African Continental Free Trade Area (ZLECAF).

In the end, the Kano-Maradi railway is not just an infrastructure project; it embodies the ability of two sister nations to combine their historical heritage, agricultural potential and vision for the future to lay the foundations for a more connected, prosperous and resilient Sahel against tomorrow's challenges.

Nigerian Intelligence Community

A customs specialist advocates for the creation of an integrated and effective intelligence structure to equip Niger with the necessary means to face the complex challenges of the 21st century. This proposal is part of a perspective aimed at strengthening national sovereignty and improving Niger's standing in the community of nations.

The author proposes the establishment of a 'Nigerian Intelligence Community' to enhance national security, stimulate the economy, and improve Niger's position on the international stage.

The need for increased collaboration between intelligence services underscores the importance of strengthened coordination among various intelligence branches (military, customs, police) to effectively combat smuggling, terrorism, and cross-border crime.

Mr. Abdoul-Kader draws inspiration from the American model of the 'United States Intelligence Community' to illustrate the effectiveness of such a structure in the economic and strategic domains.

Facing the security and economic challenges Niger confronts, an intelligence community would allow for better anticipation of threats, protection of national interests, and promotion of economic development.

The community would be led by a committee composed of representatives from different intelligence services (military, customs, police, etc.). It would be financed by a percentage of the revenue generated from anti-crime and anti-smuggling activities.

Within this framework, the government would have more reliable and comprehensive information to formulate its policies.

The community would foster cooperation with Niger’s partners in the fields of security and intelligence.

Finally, with this structure, the protection of national industries and the fight against corruption would promote economic development.
